What we covered

The conversation started where my own story started: I began as a developer and moved into testing because the questions were more interesting on that side of the wall. From there we got into the parts of the craft that don’t show up in a tool comparison table.

  • A toolkit is wider than a tool list. Most testers stop at the tools their team already pays for. The testers I learn the most from keep collecting techniques, heuristics, and small utilities that let them look at a product from an angle nobody else tried.
  • Proof of work beats a resume. A portfolio, a public write-up, a cheatsheet someone actually uses — these say more in thirty seconds than a bullet list of tool names ever will. This is the single biggest lever I would hand to anyone trying to stand out right now.
  • The human parts get more valuable, not less. As AI absorbs the repetitive work, what is left is judgement, framing the right question, and explaining a risk so that someone decides differently. That is the differentiator.

We also talked about exploratory testing as a practice rather than a phase, and why the role of the tester keeps shifting without the underlying job — protecting the value of the product — ever really changing.
